Prvič bom takodolgo v tujini in do sedaj vse poteka odlično. Ljudje so dostopni in prijazni.

Želela sem spoznati več sveta in po svojem predhodnem obisku Maribora hotela vedeti več o mestu, ljudeh in o celotni državi.

Kako Dušan vidi Pekarno I
Proizvajati zamisli, jih skušati oživiti, raziskovati in sodelovati.
Vsi ga.

Jade (Francija), 2014:

My Evs at Pekarna Magdalenske mreže Maribor started last February. I didn’t know yet that i will learn a lot of things  in severals areas. I knew that i will  stay in Europe, i will not be disoriented at all. But i hoped to learn more on the culture of the countries of Europe from the East and also about the historical past of the Slovenia.
My host organization, Infopeka, gave me a lot, always encouraging and open to new ideas. That was not usual for me in France. Here everything seems possible, people pull you up and don’t stand in your way. This is my first feeling about the slovenian associations world : What gave me a real strength and confidence on myself when to carry out projects. The EVS gives you some keys to realize project but it will especially give you the experience of people, culture and the country and also how to go forward and work together. Whether it’s with your colleagues in the organization who make you a place in their lives and at works for 1 year or with my french partner making her own EVS. I learned to divide the work and ask several opinions. We are different each others but what we have in common it’s that we want to open the perception of the others on a different way. Through educational, theatrical, volunteer activities. Share my time with other volunteers for exchanging on many ideas which are not always obvious to all. The difficulty of the language adds a few misunderstandings sometimes but over the months spent here i improve my english and slovene begging to be familiar to the ear.

In my artistic field i was able to evolve in a creative environment and my creating provisions have always solicited. We did an exhibition with my french partner in which i was able to expose drawings i did in Slovenia. I had never exhibited drawings but i had always wanted to show them in gallery. After that i find myself full of desire to continue to exhibit in different places here in Maribor, and create events around art. I need to continue to produce but in a more committed manner. Drawings helped me to understand that i am not satisfied when it comes devoid art of engaged sincere idea.
Changing of country for 1 year it’s already achieve one of my desire i had for 5 years. To be separate physically of everything which could be familiar with me. It is already an accomplishment for me to be here. I got more than i expected. It gave me the opportunity to speak and to be taken in consideration, and to no longer be taken into in a mass. Today i feel able to return in France with project ideas, desires to transmit more and mprove my state of mind. Give that positive feeling that it gave me. It’s the EVS that allowed me to visit and live my unique experience in a country.

Clementine (Francija), 2014:

I’m really happy to be in Maribor to do my EVS and especially to work at Pekarna Magdalenske mreže Maribor. It’s a very nice structure, which propose diffrents kind of events: workshops for children, conference, visits in the city, residence programm for artists, etc. What is interesting it’s that we can participate at all the projects, be here to help and participate in the same time.

We work also in the gallery K18, where we are in collaboration with the curator to help the artists to organise their exhibitions. I’m very happy to do that, which in my domain, but in another country, with new persons and new way of working.

What  is pleasant, it’s the fact that we can easily make our own projects. This month: july, we organize with 3 others artists, an exhibition in the gallery K18, about the body, but foreign and transformed body. We want to propose more activities at Infopeka, until december we would like organise others events, we have to think about now.

The EVS is also a way to meet a lot of people. Thanks to our colleagues at Infopeka, we met very specials persons for us. Then, there is a lot of volunteers in the organisation, some of them are very nice and we can hang out and enjoy of Maribor.

In addition, thanks to the others EVS around Slovenia, we met wonderful people, particularly with a lot of French and two very nice Spanish.

Slovenia is a really nice country, where we feel good and especially in security. As it’s not a big country, we can easily move and travel around, only 3 hours to go through the country, it’s a real advantage for us 🙂 . There is a landscapes diversity, we live in Maribor where it’s more mountainous but we already went in the coast: Izola and Koper, as well as in the capital which is full of activities.

Then, I notice since my arrival here, that I improved my english, I can have a discussion, while at the beggining it was difficult. Also, we start to understand better the slovene thanks to our lessons that we follow every week. But to talk it’s still complicated, because it’s a really difficult languague for us, very different of the latins languages as the french or italian.

I would like that this EVS don’t stop ever and be able to stay more to give some others projects!!

Marek (Češka), 2015

I am very glad that I decided to do European Voluntary Service. And I am very glad that I choosed Pekarna Magdalenske mreže as my host organisation. This volunteering experience fitted perfectly into my life. After spending 5 years studying Philosophy, I felt that it was time to experience something more connected to real life. But at the same time I was aware of becoming ”standard part of productive society”. EVS Volunteering in Pekarna solved it.

As volunteer in Pekarna, I could learn and improve many practical skills  – making posters, taking photographies during events, creating graphical motives for website, organizining small events as workshops, working in team and many other things. I appreciate very much all skills that I gained here and I hope that I will be able to use many of them in my professional life.
But as ”Revolucioniraj se!“ title of EVS project indicates, people in Pekarna are far from stucking in cold pragmatism. People of Pekarna are idealists (in good sense of word). Especially project of Zine Pizda gave me many opportunities to think about society a its problem. Never ending debates about politics, critical reading sessions on philosophical texts, learning details about Slovene historical, political end educational background here. All this experience transformed me into being much more critical person.

If I should characterize my EVS in Pekarna in one word, then I would use word ”encouragement”. I have been drawing pictures from my early childhood. I have been photographing from the age of 12. I have been trying to play the harmonica for 1 year. But only Pekarna encouraged me to present my caricatures in zine Pizda. Pekarna encouraged me to do my first collective exhibition Tu-biti. Pekarna encouraged me to play the harmonica in front of the public for the first time.

EVS volunteering is of course also about exploring new country. I haven’t suffered any cultural shock as Slovenia and The Czech Repubplic are very similar countries. Nevertheless, I highly appreciate this experience. Travelling through whole country, observing small differencies, having problems with similar but different language at the same time, …

Cecile (Francija), 2015

This period was for me very full and nice . I didn’t know anything about Slovenia, so at the begining of my researches for the evs, I didn’t think about this country. But my sending organization has already sent someone and they had a really good feedback. Plus it was in my field, art and culture. I am freelance illustrator and before going, I was a bit lost and I didn’t have that much opportunities. This king of job has stucked perspective since more than a decade. But in Infopeka, I was able to develop a lot of new skills and activities. Like doing workshops of drawing, or learning serigraphy. I also did a lot of different experiences, like filming and editing interviews for a festival. Of course I was involved in the volunteering work, the previous things were more like personal projects (the drawing things). I participated in various events in Maribor, I was connected to a lot of other volunteers and students there, from all around Europe and even further. To put it in a nutshell, in this organization they are fully enthusiastic, and they encourage us to make projects and to be fully invovled. Infopeka also have slovene volunteers gathered in little groups, like « Pizda ! » which is a zine with critical contents about society or « Potopisi », non formal traveller evening stories..There is PDD which is workshops for children with special needs… (there is like 7 projects) I could participate in each of those three groups, mostly as a bonus because the groups were already working well without us. Same with the whole organization, by the way. We could ad our own events in the schedule between two events of the organization, they have always a lot of things,

This experience was also a challenge for finding projects and activities with small budget. You have to use your mind, find tips and to be creative.

In the meanwhile, I had the opportunity and the time to travel a bit around alone or with friends: in Slovenia and also in Italy, Croatia, Hungary, and Bosnia. For the final evs project, I could do one exhibition. Actually it was my first ! Before I didn’t have the nerves to prepare a whole one, to eventually put the things in a bar or restaurant, were nobody would notice and were it could be damaged. Here, Infopeka has a gallery down town, and I could borrow the place with Marek who was doing photography. I am truely happy with this experience !

I highly recommend future evs to apply there 😉
